What is a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist™ and oral surgeon?

A Board Certified Veterinary Dentist™ and oral surgeon is a veterinary specialist who has achieved a high level of expertise in veterinary dental and oral care. To earn this prestigious designation, a veterinarian must first complete four years of veterinary school, followed by at least a one-year internship or equivalent practice experience. This foundational training is just the beginning of their journey. Next, they must undergo a comprehensive and rigorous supervised training period known as a “residency.” During this residency, which lasts several years, the veterinarian gains extensive hands-on experience and knowledge under the guidance of experienced mentors.

The journey to becoming a Board Certified Veterinary Dentist™ doesn’t end with the residency. Candidates must then pass a challenging written examination that tests their theoretical knowledge held over two-days. Following this, they must demonstrate their practical skills in a two-day practical examination, where they perform complex dental procedures to prove their competency. Additionally, extensive anesthesia training is an integral part of the residency, ensuring that these specialists are well-versed in managing the unique anesthetic needs of dental patients.

The entire process from the start of the residency program to earning board certification typically takes about four years. Board Certified Veterinary Dentist™ are dedicated to providing the highest quality of veterinary oral care. Their advanced training and expertise make them the ideal choice for pet parents who want the best possible dental and oral health care for their pets.

We Specialize In Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery

At Minnesota Veterinary Dental Specialists, we are equipped to treat all aspects of oral health for your pet, including oral surgery, root canal therapy, periodontal surgery and metal crown restorations. We use materials and techniques that are current with the latest research and published data in the field of veterinary and human dentistry. Our veterinary dental office uses state of the art anesthetic monitoring systems to provide us with continuous readings of the dog or cat’s vital organ systems. These monitor the EKG, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, oxygen saturation and amount of carbon dioxide exhaled. With these values, we are able to treat abnormalities before they can compromise the patient’s safety. Our clinics are also equipped with in-house blood machines that help evaluate a pet’s vital organs prior to anesthesia. We work closely with referring veterinarians and other specialists to make sure our patients receive quality veterinary dental care.

This is by far the best veterinary clinic in the Duluth area. They have qualified, experienced staff that know how to do their jobs. Prices are fair for the specialized work they perform. I wouldn’t take my Frenchies anywhere else.

Absolutely recommend Lake County Vet. They truly care for your pet. My dog has had a few surgeries and Dr Brown and all the staff have always ensured she is well cared for. They’ve always been very adaptable and reachable for all questions and concerns. If you needing a new vet, I highly encourage you to give them a call!
